Learning practical knowledge and skills while experiencing the realism of the medical field

In the twenty-first century, medicine and medical care can be said to be in an age of personalized medicine, where “the necessary amount of medicine is administered to the necessary patient. In hospitals, pharmacists need to have advanced clinical knowledge as “drug experts” of the medical teams consisting of doctors, pharmacists, nurses, laboratory technicians, and nutritionists and act as risk managers to prevent medical accidents.

Moreoverhealth insurance pharmacies are required to assume responsibility for regional medical care as part of the health management of people as “family pharmacies.” In other wordsthere is an urgent need to train pharmacists with excellent communication skills not only for dispensing prescription drugs but also for participating in creating home medical care plans for an aging society and sales of over-the-counter drugs, health foods, and nutritional supplements, etc.

To meet these public needs, a 6-year pharmacy education course was launched in April 2006. In this course, students undergo pre-practical training for pharmacy training and take general examinations called computer-based testing (CBT) and objective structured clinical examination (OSCE) in the fourth year in addition to their conventional education. Additionally, 2.5 months of long-term pharmacy practical training is conducted at pharmacies and hospitals during the fifth year.

Our laboratory was established in April 2005 and is mainly in charge of humanism education, pre-practical training for pharmacy education, OSCE, and long-term practical pharmacy training. We are working on educating students with the goals of “fostering pharmacists with social common sense” and “cultivating well-balanced pharmacists who have acquired not only knowledge of pharmacy but also a broad range of knowledge.”
