Elucidating pathologies and bringing better prevention and treatment to clinical practice

With the aim of proposing research findings to patients and physicians for the prevention and treatment of diseases, the Department of Biomolecular Pharmacology conducts research on a wide range of topics. The main research topics include:

  • Research on countermeasures against the adverse reaction of various drug therapies including cancer chemotherapy
  • Role of gut microbiota in the pathogenesis of various diseases and therapeutic applications
  • Novel functions of the water channel “aquaporin”
  • Search for cosmetic materials for the development of moisturizers and whitening agents
  • Pharmacokinetic and pharmacological analysis of functional foods and herbal medicines

In pathological conditions, the expressions and activities of various bioactive molecules in the body are known to be altered. We focus on these bioactive molecules and ask questions such as “Why are these molecules affected?”, “What kind of environment affects these molecules?”, “How can we effectively improve (or treat) these molecules and the environment?”, and attempt to elucidate these questions. In addition, we also evaluate the efficacy of functional foods and herbal medicines against these molecules and pathological conditions and investigate their mechanisms. We believe that our findings can be used to propose new preventive and therapeutic strategies for pathological conditions, thereby building a healthy society. Furthermore, our laboratory actively conducts joint research with companies to create and explore new functional materials, including cosmetics, with the aim of obtaining patents and implementing our research results in society.

In the Department of Biomolecular Pharmacology, both graduate and undergraduate students are encouraged to present their research at academic conferences. This enables them to acquire “problem-solving skills” and “presentation skills,” We develop and nurture human resources equipped with these skills.
