In today’s globalized world, it is extremely important for pharmacists and pharmaceutical researchers to enhance their English proficiency and master general communication skills in addition to their expertise in pharmacy. English is essential to search for drug information, understand pharmacy-related articles and literatures, and publicize scientific research findings. The opportunities for pharmacists to utilize English language skills have been increasing. Moreover, English is emphasized in many graduate school entrance examinations as well as employment with major companies including pharmaceutical enterprises. To serve the public good most effectively, acquiring the ability to apply practical language skills and honing logical and critical thinking skills will also be indispensable to resolving complex problems in appropriate ways.

The Laboratory staff collaborated with English teachers at other pharmaceutical universities and developed teaching materials for pharmacy students, such as “Pharmaceutical English (Seibido)”, “English for Student Pharmacists (Seibido)”, “English Conversation for Pharmaceutical Students” (Tokyo Kagaku Dōjin). She also co-authored several TOEIC textbooks as well as English education books for English learners and instructors. In addition to the development of educational materials, she has been trying to establish an integrated review method for effective English education and language acquisition as well as for the development of critical thinking skills.

At Hosi University, students will learn important technical terms, read a wide variety of materials including medical/pharmacy-related articles, write essays on health issues, and discuss the latest news and topics in English to improve their practical English proficiency. In addition, students will be trained to develop logical thinking skills, encouraged to convey their ideas and thoughts with confidence, and instructed to present their ideas and research results effectively. Students are not only expected to acquire the basic knowledge necessary to read and write English in a wide range of topics but also encouraged to acquire the ability to actually use English in their specialized fields. Learning English as a foreign language requires a very strong effort. Therefore, we are willing to provide the necessary support for our students to become independent, self-motivated English learners.
